Lisa Bayliss-Pratt
Pro-Chancellor, distinguished friends, colleagues, graduands and guests.
Dr Lisa Bayliss-Pratt, is not only the Director of Nursing for Health Education England but also is one of Coventry University’s home grown talents, in that she is a graduate of the University. It is, therefore, a particular pleasure that she is with us today.
As Director of Nursing for Health Education England, Lisa has been instrumental in improving patient experience and developing the education of nurses, midwives and health professionals across the NHS.
Lisa’s career started right here in Coventry on our Adult Nursing degree programme. She subsequently went on to study a Masters in Health Studies.
In her early career, Lisa worked in a variety of nursing roles across the public and private sector, specialising in emergency care and surgery.
Since then, she has taken up a range of national roles including operational lead for preceptorship at the Department of Health. Preceptorship is an NHS term which describes the period of time when newly qualified nurses, midwives and health professionals will be supported and mentored by an experienced colleague, to develop their confidence and skills to continue on their journey of life-long learning.
This is an ethos about which Lisa is extremely passionate. Indeed, it is a passion that led to Lisa’s involvement in the development and implementation of Flying Start England, which ensures structured but flexible learning in order to support newly qualified nurses, midwives and allied health professionals in their development from graduation and new entrant into their profession through to accomplished practitioner.
Lisa joined Health Education England in October 2012 in order to provide nursing leadership for the new education and training system. The focus of Health Education England is to ensure that the shape and skills of the future health workforce maintain the highest quality outcomes for patients.Since her appointment, Lisa has been actively involved in the compassion in practice agenda – embedding the 6 C’s of
• care,• compassion, • competence, • communication, • courage • and commitment
in all nursing and midwifery university education and training.
In addition to this, Lisa continues to be an exemplar of and a role model for nursing and midwifery and health professionals in her commitment to her own continued professional development. Accordingly, Lisa completed a Doctorate of Clinical Practice at the University of Southampton and is currently an Honorary Fellow at the University of Wolverhampton.
In July of this year, Lisa was appointed as a Trustee to the Foundation of Nursing Studies. The Foundation works with nurses and health care teams to develop innovation in health care practice. As a Trustee, Lisa will continue to help to shape the future of the organisation and support the nursing profession to deliver high quality care.
In addition to all of this, Lisa is active outside of the direct work setting. Therefore, earlier this year, Lisa and a team of 25 health visitors took part in the Great North Run to raise money for children’s charities. It is absolutely apparent, therefore, that Lisa’s passion for improving standards of care for a variety of people spills over from her professional work into her personal life.
In conclusion, it is clearly the case that Dr Lisa Baylis-Pratt is truly committed to ensuring the highest standards are promoted and ensured both in education and in health care practice and we are, therefore, delighted that she is s able to join us here today.
Pro Chancellor, distinguished friends, colleagues, graduands and guests, in recognition of her commitment to ensuring effective education and training systems to improve the education of healthcare workforce, Coventry University, by decision of the Academic Board, has the privilege of conferring the Degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa, on Lisa Bayliss-Pratt.
